Jobbers Pants Factory #3
Saul M. Schreibfeder was instrumental in persuading parent company, Standard Garments, to open an additional Jobbers Pants branch factory in Martinsville, VA and hire black women to operate it. At the time there were 2 existing Jobbers installations. Initially Plant #3 hired 50 black women but by 1939 it employed more than 1000 who produced 1200 pairs of pants a day. The higher factory wages and opportunity for piece rates had a very positive effect. Prior to this event black women could only find small wage jobs as domestics.
