Lipford Family

Click to EnlargeWilliam R. Lipford, son of Amos Lipford II and Elizabeth Frizzell Lipford, was born 1815-1816 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He remained in the county when his family moved to Tennessee, and married Lucy Thompson Soyars, daughter of Pleasant Soyars and Mary “Polly” Coleman, on 16 February 1846 in Pittsylvania County. They moved with Lucy’s brother to Rockingham County, North Carolina to open a tannery and had 2 children while living there, John Daniel Lipford in 1847 and Mary Elizabeth Lipford in 1848. By 1856 they were back in Pittsylvania County, where they had another son, William Pleasant Lipford. William R. Lipford served in the Civil War in Captain Rice’s Company, 5th Battalion. He died 19 February 1896 when a tree fell on him during a storm. His wife Lucy T. Soyars Lipford died in 1912. William and Lucy are more than likely buried in the Hyler Family Cemetery off Horseshoe Loop Road in Pittsylvania County, Virginia where there are many unmarked field stones. Their son John Daniel Lipford married Martha Ann Hiler/Hyler 1867 in Pittsylvania County. Lucy T. Lipford, widow of William R. Lipford, from Pittsylvania County, is listed on the Confederate Pension Rolls, Act of 1900, Roll No. 277, page 126. She applied for the Civil War widow's pension on May 10, 1900. Lucy was awarded $25 annually on May 12, 1902.

William Pleasant Lipford and wife - click to enlargeWilliam Pleasant Lipford, son of William R. Lipford and Lucy T. Soyars Lipford, was born 09 November 1856 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. William was a farmer and carpenter. He married Ann Mariah Vaughan, daughter of John Smith Vaughan and Mariah Jane Dowdy, on 26 December 1877 in Pittsylvania County. William and Ann had nine children, including Minnie Jane Lipford Ashworth, Lula Missouri Lipford, Maggie Lipford, John Will Lipford, Beverley Crowder Lipford who died in Martinsville VA, Franklin Clay Lipford, Thomas Jefferson “Muncie” Lipford, Virginia “Virgie” Lipford Wall, and Loyd Fields Lipford. After Ann Vaughan Lipford’s death in 1904, William married Florence J. Wagner 28 July 1910 in Danville. William Pleasant Lipford died 27 March 1943 in Pittsylvania County. Florence Wagner Lipford died 1928 in Danville, Virginia. They are buried in the Soyars Family Cemetery near Brosville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
